Becoming (2004)
Ink, spirograph, fire, wax, incense, rocks, orange, honey
The Buddha Project
Gallery U, Cleveland
A site specific drawing made directly on the walls of the
gallery. The drawing itself (made with the use of a spirograph,
the 1960's art making device for children) contains thousands
of various small circles representing the Buddha as a formless
form. The first phase of the drawing was completed in four days,
and was continued over a period of 3 months.
Becoming is the third in a continuing series of spirograph draw-
ing based installations about direct personal experience and
connection to various deities and devotional subject matter.
The Hindu concept of Puja (devotional reverence to God or Spirit)
is referred to in these pieces as they serve as a means of gaining
access to the divine.
In this particular piece, the temporary nature of the work relates to
Buddhist concepts of impermanence and non-attachment, referencing
the sand mandalas created by Tibetan Buddhist monks which are
meticulously created over a short period of time and then swept up
and dispersed into a flowing river or stream.
At the completion of the show the Buddha was washed away.
